What Is Skinvive?

Skinvive is an innovative hyaluronic acid treatment by Juvederm, specifically designed to improve overall skin quality. Numerous microdroplets of cross-linked hyaluronic acid are injected into the superficial layer of the skin, evenly distributed in a fine grid pattern.

Goal: Hydration, Not Volume

Unlike traditional hyaluronic acid fillers, Skinvive does not add volume. Instead, it visibly enhances the skin’s hydration, radiance, and elasticity—a benefit confirmed by the U.S. FDA.

One key mechanism is the proven increase of aquaporin levels in skin cell membranes. These water-channel proteins improve moisture transport between cells, leading to better hydration and a smoother skin texture. The result is a fresh, evenly radiant complexion without altering facial contours.

Skinvive Is the Successor to Volite

In my Munich practice, I have extensive experience with this type of treatment—long before it was introduced as Skinvive. Nearly ten years ago, Juvederm launched Volite, the predecessor to Skinvive, which I frequently and successfully used. While Volite had a slightly narrower range of applications, the injection technique was identical. Like Skinvive, it functioned as a skin booster, with the primary goal of improving skin hydration.

How I use Skinvive in Munich

In my Munich practice, I primarily use Skinvive when the skin appears dry, rough, or creased but no volume enhancement is desired. This treatment is ideal for patients seeking fresh, smooth, and naturally revitalized skin—without an “overfilled” look.

I most often use Skinvive in the following cases:

  • Fine Lines Around the Mouth:
Around the mouth—especially perioral lines and fine creases of the upper and lower lip—Skinvive can be injected very superficially. The gel’s thin consistency allows even distribution while its cross-linking ensures stability. This smooths out fine wrinkles without adding volume and minimizes the risk of a visible “barcode effect.” It also deeply hydrates and refines the delicate skin around the lips.
  • Skin Texture Improvement on the Cheeks:
Here, I use Skinvive as a broad skin-quality booster. The result is smoother, more even, and more radiant skin. Particularly in dull, mildly sun-damaged, or dry skin, visible improvement appears within two to four weeks.
  • Backs of the Hands and Knuckles:
Another key area is the hands, where Skinvive creates a smoother and more uniform surface without overfilling. This is ideal for visibly thin or bony hands. The product’s light yet stable texture distributes evenly, leaving the hands looking younger and more refined while maintaining their natural contour.
  • Neck and Décolletage:
On delicate neck and décolletage skin, Skinvive gently smooths fine lines and improves texture. Especially before summer or festive occasions such as Oktoberfest, this treatment is highly requested in my Munich practice. Well-hydrated skin appears fresher and more radiant, whether in a dirndl or a bikini. Skinvive can also be effectively combined with microneedling, enhancing hydration, collagen stimulation, and overall skin rejuvenation.

This subtle microinjection technique allows for precise treatment of fine creases and skin laxity. The skin appears smoother and fresher, with visibly improved light reflection. Because Skinvive does not add volume, the result looks natural and discreet—ideal for patients who want to “look better” without it being obvious that a procedure was done.

When appropriate, I also combine Skinvive with other treatments such as botulinum toxin, PRP, or traditional hyaluronic acid fillers to target different skin layers. This achieves a comprehensive yet harmonious rejuvenation of the skin.

Results and Longevity of the Treatment

  • Initial results usually appear within a few days. The skin looks smoother, more even, and gains a fresh, natural glow. Many patients notice improved hydration and elasticity even at this early stage.
  • The full effect develops after about two to four weeks, once the injected hyaluronic acid has fully integrated into the tissue and stabilized the skin’s moisture balance. The complexion then appears visibly firmer and more radiant.
  • Results typically last up to nine months after one session. Duration and intensity vary depending on skin condition, lifestyle, and skincare routine but can be maintained through regular touch-ups.

Treatment Procedure

Unlike conventional hyaluronic acid fillers, Skinvive is injected across a wide area into the superficial layer of the skin, rather than at a few isolated points. Each side of the face typically requires 20 to 40 microinjections. The key factor in this method is the high number of injection sites, which can cause discomfort without anesthesia. For this reason, I generally recommend local numbing before treatment.

Typical Procedure:

  1. Preparation: Thorough cleansing and disinfection of the skin.
  2. Marking: Injection sites are mapped according to skin condition and treatment goals. For more mature skin, points are marked in a 0.5 × 0.5 cm grid; for younger skin, spacing of about 1 × 1 cm is sufficient.
  3. Injection: Intradermal placement of numerous microdroplets of cross-linked hyaluronic acid using fine 32-gauge needles—similar in thickness to an insulin syringe. Following manufacturer guidelines, approximately 2 ml per cheek and 1 ml for the forehead are injected, totaling 2–3 ml for the face. Recommended amounts: 1 ml for the neck, 1.5 ml for the décolletage, and 1–1.5 ml per hand.
  4. Immediate Aftercare: Cooling to reduce swelling and redness; no massage of the treated areas.
  5. Aftercare Instructions: Avoid makeup, sun exposure, and temperatures below 0°C for the first 12 hours. Sauna and steam baths should be avoided for two weeks.

Skinvive is injected into the face in a 1 × 1 cm grid, or 0.5 × 0.5 cm for more mature skin. On the neck and hands, injections are placed 0.5 cm apart (illustration: Allergan Aesthetics).

Risks and Possible Side Effects

Like any injection-based procedure, Skinvive may cause temporary reactions or, in rare cases, unwanted side effects, including:

  • Mild swelling or redness at the injection sites
  • Small bruises from minor vessel irritation
  • Temporary asymmetry due to uneven distribution or swelling
  • Small nodules or irregularities, usually transient and self-resolving
  • Mild itching or tightness immediately after treatment
  • Rare allergic reactions, possibly delayed
  • Vascular injury or embolism in exceptional cases—risk is minimal since Skinvive is injected very superficially and I use only anatomically safe techniques

All reactions are typically mild and short-lived. Careful selection of treatment areas and professional application in my Munich practice significantly reduce the risk of serious complications.

Cost of a Skinvive Treatment

The cost of a Skinvive treatment is:

  • From approx. €560 for the face (2 ml)
  • From approx. €990 for face, neck, and décolletage (4 ml)

These are indicative prices, billed according to the German Medical Fee Schedule (GOÄ).

When assessing costs, keep in mind that Skinvive usually delivers results lasting around nine months after a single treatment. This compares favorably with other skin boosters, which may be less expensive per session but typically require at least two treatments to achieve similar longevity.

In my Munich practice, I offer independent and transparent advice to determine the most effective approach for your individual skin condition and aesthetic goals.
