The Fat-Dissolving Injection can help reduce small, stubborn fat deposits in a targeted way – without surgery and without extended downtime.

In my practice in Munich, I primarily treat smaller areas such as the double chin, abdomen, hips, upper arms, knees, or mons pubis. A realistic assessment is important: the fat-dissolving injection does not replace weight loss. It is suitable for localized fat deposits that remain despite diet and exercise.

What Is the Fat-Dissolving Injection?

Treating a double chin with the fat-dissolving injection at LIPS and SKIN in Munich

The medical term for the fat-dissolving injection is Injection Lipolysis. A special active compound is injected directly into a small fat deposit. The fat cells in that area are dissolved and then broken down by the body through normal metabolic processes.

This method is particularly suitable for patients who do not want to lose weight in general, but are bothered by a specific body area. Typical examples include a small double chin, fat deposits on the abdomen or hips, or small fat pads above the knees.

How Does Injection Lipolysis Work?

For this treatment, I use a compound containing Phosphatidylcholine and Deoxycholate. These substances affect the membrane of the fat cells. This releases the stored fat, which is then broken down by the body.

This process does not happen overnight. After treatment, there is usually a visible tissue response at first: swelling, redness, burning, or tenderness are normal signs of the treatment effect. The actual contour improvement then develops gradually over several weeks.

Who Is the Fat-Dissolving Injection Suitable For?

The fat-dissolving injection is suitable for women and men with normal or slightly elevated body weight who want to target individual small fat deposits.

The treatment is especially appropriate when the fat deposit is clearly defined and the skin still has sufficient elasticity. In my practice in Munich, I therefore always first assess whether injection lipolysis truly makes sense for the desired area.

Who Is This Treatment Not Suitable For?

The fat-dissolving injection is not a method for general weight reduction. It is also not an alternative to liposuction when larger amounts of fat need to be removed.

The treatment is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, in cases of acute inflammation in the treatment area, severe liver disease, certain metabolic disorders, or known intolerance to any component of the active compound.

If a fat deposit is too large, I will openly discuss whether another method would be more appropriate from a medical and economic perspective.

Typical Treatment Areas

Double Chin

The double chin is one of the most common reasons for choosing the fat-dissolving injection. Even small fat deposits under the chin can make the face appear softer or heavier. Injection lipolysis can gently define the jawline when there is sufficient skin elasticity.

Abdomen and Hips

Small fat pads on the lower abdomen or hips can often be difficult to influence through exercise alone. The fat-dissolving injection can help create a slightly more harmonious contour in these areas. However, it is not the right method for larger fat deposits.

Upper Arms

On the upper arms, treatment usually focuses on small fat pads on the back of the arms. A careful examination is important because not every upper-arm concern is caused by fat. Skin laxity often also plays a role.

Knees

Small fat deposits above or to the side of the knees can affect the line of the legs. Treatment in this area is more about subtle contouring and should not be confused with large-area fat reduction.

Mons Pubis

A more pronounced mons pubis can also be treated with the fat-dissolving injection if it is a small, clearly defined fat deposit. Treatment is performed with particular care and only after an in-person examination.

How the Treatment Works

Before each treatment, I discuss which area is bothering you and what result can realistically be achieved. The region is then examined, documented with photographs, and marked.

The skin is then disinfected. If desired and depending on the area, I apply a numbing cream beforehand. The active compound is then injected into the fatty tissue using fine needles.

The area is cooled immediately after treatment. The treatment usually takes 20–30 minutes. There is generally no real downtime. Even so, you should plan the treatment so that visible swelling during the first few days is not inconvenient.

When Will You See the Result?

The first changes usually appear after a few weeks. The result is typically assessed after about 8–12 weeks.

In most cases, a single treatment is not enough. For a visible and even result, 2–4 sessions are often recommended. The exact interval depends on the area and the tissue response.

How Long Does the Result Last?

The treated fat cells are permanently reduced. The result therefore generally lasts long term if body weight remains stable.

With significant weight gain, however, fat deposits can also reappear in treated areas. The fat-dissolving injection therefore does not replace a healthy lifestyle, but can complement it for localized problem areas.

Risks and Side Effects

Local reactions are normal after the fat-dissolving injection. These include swelling, redness, burning, tenderness, small bruises, or temporary firm areas.

These reactions are usually expected because they are part of the breakdown process in the tissue. However, they may be clearly visible or noticeable for several days.

In rare cases, stronger inflammatory reactions, allergic reactions, longer-lasting palpable nodules, or skin irritation may occur. More serious local complications are very rare. For this reason, the treatment should only be performed by medically qualified providers using tested preparations.

Aftercare Following the Fat-Dissolving Injection

After treatment, you should cool the area and avoid strong pressure on the treated region for the first few days. Tight clothing, strong friction, sauna, intense sun exposure, and exercise should initially be avoided.

I also recommend that my patients in Munich avoid alcohol for about 48 hours. During this phase, the body is processing the local inflammatory response and the breakdown process.

Cost of the Fat-Dissolving Injection

The cost depends on the area, the extent of treatment, and the amount of active compound required. Billing is based on the German medical fee schedule (GOÄ).

FAQ – Fat-Dissolving Injection in Munich

What Is the Difference Between a Fat-Dissolving Injection and Injection Lipolysis?

There is no difference. Injektionslipolyse is the medical term; fat-dissolving injection is the commonly used, easy-to-understand term.

Which Areas Are Particularly Suitable for the Fat-Dissolving Injection?

Small, clearly defined fat deposits are particularly suitable. Typical areas include the double chin, abdomen, hips, upper arms, knees, back folds, bra-line area, or mons pubis.

Can a Double Chin Be Treated with the Fat-Dissolving Injection?

A small double chin can often be treated well with the fat-dissolving injection if it is primarily caused by fat tissue. If skin laxity or the anatomy of the chin is the main issue, another treatment may be more appropriate.

Is the Fat-Dissolving Injection Suitable for Weight Loss?

No. The fat-dissolving injection is not a weight-loss injection and not a method for weight reduction. It is suitable for improving the contour of individual small fat deposits.

How Many Sessions Are Needed?

Usually, 2–4 sessions are recommended. Very small areas may sometimes require fewer treatments. For larger fat deposits, however, the method can quickly become uneconomical.

When Will You See the Result of the Fat-Dissolving Injection?

Initial changes usually become visible after a few weeks. I generally assess the final result of one session after about 8–12 weeks.

Is the Result Permanent?

The treated fat cells are permanently reduced. However, the result remains stable only if body weight remains largely stable.

Is the Treatment Painful?

The injections may burn and feel tender. I therefore usually recommend a numbing cream, especially for sensitive areas such as the chin.

What Will I Look Like Immediately After Treatment?

The treated area is often swollen, red, and tender. Especially under the chin, swelling may be clearly visible during the first few days.

Will I Be Socially Presentable After the Fat-Dissolving Injection?

Usually yes, but with some limitations. You can generally work normally, but should plan for visible swelling and redness.

Can I Exercise After Treatment?

Intense exercise should be avoided for a few days. Light movement is usually fine as long as there is no strong pressure or friction on the treated area.

Can I Drink Alcohol After the Fat-Dissolving Injection?

I recommend avoiding alcohol for about 48 hours. Alcohol can increase swelling and bruising and place additional strain on the body.

What Should I Avoid After Treatment?

During the first few days, avoid heat, sauna, intense sun exposure, exercise, massage, strong friction, and tight clothing in the treated area.

Can the Fat-Dissolving Injection Tighten the Skin?

The treatment may support slight tightening through the local tissue response. However, it does not replace a treatment for significant skin laxity.

Which Is Better: Fat-Dissolving Injection or Liposuction?

That depends on the individual findings. For small fat deposits, the fat-dissolving injection may be appropriate. For larger amounts of fat, liposuction is often more effective and more economical.

Can the Fat-Dissolving Injection Be Combined with Other Treatments?

Yes. Depending on the goal, combining it with other aesthetic treatments can make sense. However, this should be planned individually to avoid overstimulating the tissue.

Is the Fat-Dissolving Injection Allowed During Pregnancy or Breastfeeding?

No. I do not perform fat-dissolving injections during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

What Side Effects Are Possible?

Common side effects include swelling, redness, burning, tenderness, bruising, or temporary firm areas. Rarely, stronger inflammatory reactions, nodules, or allergic reactions may occur.

Can the Fat-Dissolving Injection Be Dangerous?

Like any injection treatment, the fat-dissolving injection has risks. It should therefore only be performed by medically qualified providers using appropriate preparations.

How Much Does the Fat-Dissolving Injection Cost in Munich?

In my practice, costs start at approx. €220 per session, depending on the area. Larger areas cost more because they require more active compound and treatment time.

Are the Costs Covered by Health Insurance?

Usually not. The fat-dissolving injection is an aesthetic self-pay treatment.

What If I Am Unsure Whether the Fat-Dissolving Injection Is Right for Me?

In that case, a consultation is recommended. I will assess whether the area that bothers you is truly caused by fat tissue and whether injection lipolysis is the right method.
